Ask the Cast: I Challenge You

Niallsb: Dear Charlotte,

I realise that you hate Amy but in all fairness would you honestly describe her as evil?
No seriously.

I think that you should try to see Amy not just as a real-life, randy Barbie but as a human being.
So, I challenge you to say at least two positive things about Amy that do not involve her looks, her ability to attract men or her wealth.

Also, does Shivani dislike Amy more because you do or more of her own accord?

Salutations, Greetings and Regards (that was lavish),
Niallsb

Charlotte: Okay, Niallsb, if I was being entirely honest with myself I wouldn't be able to say Amy is entirely evil. I'm sure there must be a grain of goodness deep down inside. Deep, deep down. A really small grain.

I mean, sometimes I think that Amy doesn't realise how hurtful she can be and that to her it's just friendly banter. Then I discover she's poured milk into my bed. The problem is that whatever Amy's motives are, she makes it really difficult for me to feel confident about myself sometimes. Sometimes I'll make jokes about her looks or her...erm...lifestyle but the fact is that the way Amy looks doesn't make her a bad person. Her general air-headedness doesn't make her a bad person. Her wealth doesn't make her a bad person. Even her promiscuity doesn't make her a bad person.

Her utter contempt for those around her, her blatant disregard for other people's feelings and her irrational hatred for everything unique or different - these things make her a bad person. She's also the world's biggest phony - I thought she was really nice when we moved in together.

I'll concede Amy is a human being. A complete bitch of a human being.

Now, let's see. At least two positive things. Well, she's very confident about her body. She's never afraid to speak her mind no matter how controversial or offensive it might be. She knows what she wants in life and she's not afraid to get it. She loves her parents - her father, at least. I don't know how well she gets on with her mother. She's pretty punctual. She takes an active role in the fight against heart disease by ridiculing fat people. And she doesn't vote, which is a virtue with someone like Amy. I'm sure in that list there must be what amounts to two nice things to say about Amy.

You know, Shivani's always been more tolerant of Amy but that's probably because Amy largely ignores her. I'm sure to some extent she only resents Amy to show solidarity but on the other hand I think she might be jealous of Amy in some ways.

In conclusion I'd say that Amy mostly comes off as annoying rather than evil - there's certainly nothing sinister about her. She doesn't really have the imagination to be truly villainous.

I hope that answers your question!

Charlotte Lloyd
